"Semiconductor engineer" means almost nothing. A verification lead, an RTL designer, a physical-design specialist and a process integration engineer are different professionals with different pipelines. Look wider than the obvious hubs
The instinct is to fish in the same handful of established clusters, alongside everyone else. But strong silicon talent exists in more places than the industry's mental map suggests — including adjacent domains where the underlying skills transfer with the right support. Widening the search widens the field.
Blend permanent hires with project specialists
Tape-out cycles are spiky. Staffing your permanent team for peak load leaves people underused between projects; staffing for the average leaves you short when it counts. A core permanent team supplemented by specialists for the crunch keeps you moving without overcommitting.
Grow your own where you can
The most durable answer to a shortage is a pipeline. Strong engineers from neighbouring disciplines, given real mentorship, become the silicon specialists you can't hire today. It's slower than a lateral hire and far more reliable over a few years.
